The Loray Mill village is the historic mill neighborhood around the 1902 Loray Mill in west Gastonia. How home age changes plumbing in Gastonia

Before about 1960, supply lines were commonly galvanized steel and sewer laterals were clay tile or cast iron. Those systems now show up as low pressure, rusty water and root clogs. Homes from the 1970s to mid-1990s may have polybutylene supply pipe. Homes built since the 2000s mostly use PEX or CPVC, and their calls are more often water heaters, fixtures and drain clogs.

Utilities and who to call

Most Gastonia addresses are served by the City of Gastonia's water and sewer system. Leaks at or before the water meter, or problems in the public sewer main, belong to the city. After hours, call 704-866-6843. Everything on the house side of the meter, and the private sewer lateral, is the property owner's responsibility.

Permits

Water heater replacements, new piping and sewer repairs generally require a permit and inspection in North Carolina. Licensed plumbers pull permits as part of the job. Digging for water or sewer line repairs requires an NC 811 locate first.
